Savannah River Site: Leading the world with sustainable solutions.
A safer, smarter world: As a national and global leader in nuclear materials management, cleanup and nuclear non-proliferation, the Savannah River Site (SRS) is unique in capabilities and vital responsibilities that range from converting weapons-grade plutonium for peaceful use to recycling a finite supply of tritium.
SRS is also home to the Savannah River National Laboratory (SRNL), a globally recognized research center of excellence employing a staff of approximately 900. Working with sister Department of Energy (DOE) entities, or in partnership with industry, academia and other government agencies, SRNL has assumed a leading role in formulating effective, innovative solutions to a range of global challenges, including:
Clean Energy: SRNL’s multiple areas of expertise are in critical demand, whether leveraged within the automotive industry, for example, to develop the needed technologies for practicable hydrogen vehicles, or utilized in the deployment of small modular reactor (SMR) technology, nuclear technology that supports clean energy systems.
National Security: Global nuclear nonproliferation and detection, counter-proliferation, deterrence and threat reduction are crucial imperatives that SRS is addressing through research and development, demonstrations, and forensic analysis.
Environmental Stewardship: SRS’s singular expertise in nuclear materials disposal is generating viable solutions for the nation’s nuclear disposition goals, important both to DOE and non-DOE clients.
With its impressive record as the safest site in the Department of Energy Complex, indeed one of the safest industrial sites in the world, SRS is a valued Augusta MSA employer, operating on an annual budget of roughly $1.6 billion, with an annual payroll of over $900 million. The intellectual and human capital that SRS brings to the Central Savannah River Area (CSRA) is equally important; a quarter of the SRNL staff hold doctorate degrees.
Leading Opportunity: The urgent quest for clean energy solutions and the pressing and on-going tasks of global nuclear non-proliferation and nuclear material disposal promise to maintain and propel ever higher demand for SRS’s unique capabilities, expertise and assets well into the future.
